How to get superfast broadband
Hampshire County Council is rolling out superfast broadband to as many people as possible and we’re delighted to let you know that you should now be able to get faster online speeds.
It is not automatic – you still have to find a package and price that suits you.
Step 1: Type in your postcode
Go to the Openreach website and enter your postcode into the box.
This gives you the predicted internet speeds at your property.
You should be able to get 24Mbps or more (superfast speeds). if this is the case, stay on this website and go to step 2.
Step 2: Compare packages and prices
Go to 'Click here to see a list of home broadband providers' to get a list of suppliers that offer superfast broadband packages. Alternatively use a price comparison website or ask your current Internet Service Provider how much it would cost to switch to superfast.
Why go superfast?
Superfast broadband can make everyday activities quicker and easier. Benefits include:
- No buffering while streaming TV/films and gaming
- The ability to use several devices at once with no interference
- More reliable internet connections – for working or learning from home
- Quicker online shopping, banking and more
What’s stopping you?
Concern: It’s too expensive
Reality: It could be cheaper or similar to your current contract
Sometimes older standard broadband packages are outdated and more costly than new superfast broadband packages. Shop around – check the provider list on the Openreach website and use a comparison checker to find the best deal for you.
Concern: I’m tied into a contract
Reality: Many people are unaware of when their contracts expire
Check your contract. If you can’t find it, call your provider who should be able to tell you when your contract expires. If you do decide to change providers, you only have to notify the company you wish to move to as they will make it all happen.
Concern: I won’t get the speeds I’m promised
Reality: This won’t be the case from March 2019
In the future, internet service providers will have to give a minimum guaranteed speed at the point of sale. This will make it a lot easier to know what to expect. In the meantime, see the Which.co.uk guide (details below) for advice.

What if my predicted speed is below 24Mbps?
This could be because your property is too far away from an upgraded broadband cabinet to benefit from faster speeds. Please be assured that we are looking to reach more premises all the time, so an upgrade may come in due course.
